CITATION
Hidden amid the dazzling human mosaic of India are millions of tribal people. For centuries, they have lived apart in remote highlands and forests. The Madia Gonds, for example, occupy 150 square kilometers of dense forest in eastern Maharashtra, bordering Andhra Pradesh and Chattisgarh states. In a thousand isolated villages, they survive by hunting and gathering and shifting cultivation. When Prakash Amte and Mandakini Amte arrived in their midst thirty-four years ago, the region had no modern services. Government officials considered it wild and served there only reluctantly. By contrast, the Amtes, both of them medical doctors, came by choice. Prakash Amte grew up in Anandwan, an ashram and rehabilitation center for leprosy patients in Maharashtra founded by his father, the renowned Gandhian humanitarian Murlidhar Devidas Amte, or Baba Amte. Prakash was busy with postgraduate surgical studies in Nagpur when, in 1974, he volunteered to take over a new project begun by Baba Amte among the Madia Gonds. He and his wife Mandakini abandoned their urban practices and, in a leap of faith, moved to remote Hemalkasa. The young couple settled in a doorless hut without a telephone or electricity or privacy. They practiced medicine beside the road and warmed themselves by a wood fire at night. The Madia Gonds, shy people and suspicious of outsiders, spurned their help at first. Prakash and Mandakini learned their language and patiently gained their trust. The miraculous cures of an epileptic boy with terrible burns and a man near death from cerebral malaria turned the tide. "Once a patient is cured," says Prakash, "he comes back and brings four new patients." Beginning in 1975, Swissaid provided funds to build and equip a small hospital in Hemalkasa. There Prakash and Mandakini performed surgery and treated malaria, tuberculosis, and dysentery, burns and animal bites. To conform to tribal sensibilities, they placed most of the hospital's facilities out of doors, beneath the trees. They charged nothing. Illiteracy had made the Madia Gonds easy prey for corrupt forest officers and other greedy outsiders. The Amtes helped them assert their rights and intervened to mediate disputes and rid the area of abusive officials. In 1976, they opened a school. The Madia Gonds were reluctant to send their children but, in time, the school prospered and became a center for both academic and vocational education. Prakash and Mandakini's own children were educated there. The Amtes have used the school at Hemalkasa to introduce the Madia Gonds to settled agriculture-growing vegetables, fruits, and irrigated grains organically-and to encourage them to conserve forest resources. This includes wild animals, a tribal dietary staple. The Amtes' popular animal orphanage at Hemalkasa promotes the survival of animals as part of nature's balance. Simplicity and respect guide the Amtes' work with the Madia Gonds. Prakash wears only a singlet and white shorts as he goes about his work, so as not to identify himself with "well-dressed" outsiders. Where applicable, the couple incorporates tribal cures in their medical practice. In school, children perform tribal songs and dances. Today, the Amtes' hospital has fifty beds, a staff of four doctors, and treats forty thousand patients a year free of charge. It is a regional center for mother-child welfare and health education. Its "barefoot doctors" bring first aid to outlying villages. The Amtes' school, meanwhile, has grown to six hundred students and is comprehensive. Among its graduates are the Madia Gonds' first doctors and lawyers and teachers as well as officials, office workers, and police. "More than 90 percent of the students have come back to serve in the community, including my sons," says Prakash, reflecting on his and Mandakini's legacy. "Maybe it's the way we have led our lives." In electing Prakash Amte and Mandakini Amte to receive the 2008 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership, the board of trustees recognizes their enhancing the capacity of the Madia Gonds to adapt positively in today's India, through healing and teaching and other compassionate intervention.

Notes - Lok Biradari Prakalp was started by Baba Amte in 1973. Since then Dr.Prakash & Dr.Manda Amte running this project. Activities: Free 50 bedded general hospital, 1st to 12th class Residential school for 600 Madia-gond tribal children & Animal Orphanage for the Wild Animals.

MAHATMA ! come back!!

MAHATMA IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO COME BACK AGAIN! We can't find you through cureency notes and your big photographs, and idols. We want you alive and now.
Such is a situation, never before!
And before it is too late you need to do something.. your thoughts are very ridiculously crushed by us in the name of development and so on and what not?

The Varakari who never bothered to look beyond vithoba is now fighting against DOW......
and now we can't stop nor we can run after the mad agreemants or commitments of anybody in the name of global villaging.

Here is a message from one of my pals.

i'm was involved as a volunteer in the anti dow campaign in the pune.

if you check in this week's news then you'll find agressive protests from the locals.

but media has not raised the issue as they would have.

in spite of being educated...people are not aware of the enviornmental issue. if they gonna pollute the pune ...then it won't take much time to distroy the enviornment of the whole maharastra(considerig the geography and political sitautions.) i kindly request u to raise thios issue on your blog.
i'll be going to visit that location in pune ...shinde vasuli village on this sunday
.

The protest requires now adays professional tools and street plays are the best. It is not defeating some company but we need to find out the truth and work upon living strategy.
Safdar Hashmi i remember you because bringing th street realities of life was your expertise and where are you?

Let me appeal the community to find the truth out of the turmoil and some resources for help on gandhian thoughts and followership... I was exploring on net on gandhi and i found oasis of these people with gandhilibrary.org

these are the people, member of the board of trustees of gandhilibrary.org .

Communicate with them and may be you will find some more better ways to fight for the cause of people and society.

NOT ME THIS TIME!

The doomsday fun was the reallife situation for me last week.My mother was hospitalised for heart related trouble and we were struggling for the meaning of life and death... if any thing goes wrong with your dearones you feel that it is the end of the world and when th end of the world will be there we search for new ideas.Or we want to settle for the idea that OH NOT ME THIS TIME!

I had a friend in advertising who called me some years back asking me whether i was alive and working. He had read some news in the newspaper and the similarity of the name he said made him feel as if ... fun apart the reality thereafter was totally different and he had an accident and leave us on the spot. I remembere him calling me and laughing at me asking voh mai to nahi? and i had said, NOT ME THIS TIME..

The speed of thought and action is creating a direct trouble and intervention in our living. We should know the limits of human being and being human ...

The incidence of hospitalisation and everybody rushing to get rid of the environment of fear is a mad scene in India. The health workers too suffer a lot due to work pressure. The great Dr NItu Mandke the worlds famous cardiac scholar had to die out of widows syndrome. The starck realities of life sometimes lead to avery funny troubles. The real hridayparivartan an start only if we practically accept few things.

That is

we are mortal.

We keep changing.

We have to keep changing for survival.

We may not contrubute anything to society but we have to retain and ramain with everybody.

My father a wellknown marathi poet and teacher died in 2001 due to cancer, and he wrote an article the last article in which he gave five basic realisations they are

I am for nobody.

Nobody is for mine.

I am for God.

God is for me.

I am the God or God is me.

These are the stages in the life one has to clearly understand and accept. He lived a great life meditated a lot and helped people with his emotional approach without intellectual barriers. We should not head towards our future forgetting our hearts.I remember ARATI PRABHU very reknown poet in Marathi at tis point of time and felt that we are all poets like WALYAKOLI TURNED WALMIKI.

Everytime for the dreams of our own desires and family members we rob our lives and the truth by drawing convinient meanings and associations with people, when our family members desert us we become WALMIKIS and that is the ramayana of life nothing else.Everybody has a different ramayana and if we don not understand it then mahabharaht happens.

So everyday one should say thanks god.... NOT ME THIS TIME.

DOOMSDAY

Tomorow is supposed to be the doomsday! the CERN lab experiement is going to reveal the mystery of our origin and history of universe. You may better visit doomsdayguide.org and Survive2012.com with various predictions and aspirations. The divide in two teams of scientists says that a mini blackhole will be created and that is harmfull to the earth.many of them feel that it is just a small scientific experiment to confirm the bigbang theory.

Th yahoo news story has a brief account ...

As physicists get set to recreate the Big Bang, German chemistry professor Otto Rossler predicts that their experiment will actually create a mini black hole that will suck all life and light into it and lead to the end of the world. On Wednesday, somewhere below the French-Swiss border, scientists at CERN (a European organisation for nuclear research) are getting ready to drive two beams of particles into each other at close to the speed of light in a machine called the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).
This will recreate the Big Bang and answer questions about the origins of life, the universe and everything. Black hole creation Though no one really knows what 'will' happen, all sorts of theories of sudden annihilation abound.
CERN's strongest opponent Otto R and #246;ssler, a German chemistry professor, argues that just as with the Big Bang, this experiment too will create a mini-black-hole, an intense gravitational field that will keep sucking in matter until the entire world, and all its light, is gone. To counter the bad press, a rap video on CERN is doing the rounds on YouTube.

WILL IT END TOMORROW?

I have read swami vivekananda quoting about the cycle of universe in some book, he said this is a never ending cycle and when it will happen we human beings in this form of evolution will not be there at that time..

Curiousity, anxiety and seeking truth have different shades of life. Let us see what happens...

Local events that hit global perceptions

BAIL SAVASIN AAI/
APAN PITARANCHE THAI/
THOR VECH JALA NASHTA/
AVAGHYA APSAVYA CHESTA/
VISHAYANCHE CHARAVANI/KELI AYUSHYACHI GALANI//
Nowadays the local changes that are taking place especially in rural india make lot of sense in the social chemistry of indian society.I am typing this seating here just 25 km away from a place where this happended and i can not accept it.A house wife caught under fire finally died and her creamation was objected by the villagers and in the mob anger they set fire in the inlaws house in the village when they were in the funeral of the unfortunate girl.
How do you you understand this?

/www.esakal.com/esakal/09072008/Kolhapur0E82208C34.htm

MUSIC DISSOLVES ALL THE DIFFRENCES!

Music is my passion. I f i really have some chance to be on this earth and reappear then it is music that pulls me back on the earth and keeps me alive.
The inner drive from the childhood i have been carrying for many days and i don't know how it is going to cherish.
When i was studying in a college i had an opportunity to visit SAWAI GANDHARV SANGEET MAHOTSAV. I remember having listened to Pt Jasraj, sanjiv abhyankar ( He was first time introduced in pune) and Pt Bhimsenji concluding the sessions. Shivji Hariji and so on. yes a dn Pt abdul ahlim Jaffar Khan with Sitar.Oh i can't believ in it.
I wish that let music flow through all of us and dissolve all the differences.Music absorbs all your emotions and thoughts and helps you in settling peacefully. And so is the need of the hour for all the situations i believe.

The Story of India and Mahatma Gandhi

I have been known as crank, faddist, madman.Evidently, the reputation is well deserved. For wherever i go.I draw to myself, cranks, faddists and madmen".

" The golden rule of conduct is mutual toleration's.Seeing that we will never all think alike and we shall always see Truth in fragments and form different angles of vision". MAHATMA GANDHI

when i was in seventh standard and we were studying drawing i remember i had drawn Gandhi before 2nd Oct and the trick was except his eyes which i had traced it with tracing paper i had sketched everything else in the picture. I remember that the picture was displayed in the school.

The more and more i learnt about him i hated his ideas and thoughts and more i hated them more i developed interest in his thoughts and life.It was the film GANDHI by Richard Attenbourough when i saw the hate was converted into love for the the old man. I remember my grandmother used to tell me that during her school days once Lokmanya Tilak had come to her school and she had garlanded him on the occasion. However Gandhi came in our home through books and pictures.

The college where i studied has 125 years old library where i read even more books on Krishnamurthi and Gandhi Bertarnd Rusell, P G Wodehouse. Again he influenced me.

In those days not being able to buy first hand books i used to go to Chand baba a very famous old book stall owner who gave me the series of 12 books on gandhi with photographs and that was the final transformation.I keep on understanding him and last year when MUNNABHAI was released it was again gandhi who was reinterpreted.

I like him on currency notes, in books, in films and in pictures.Just yesterday i got a boook on him in marathi which describes the various personalities in his life and their versions and descriptions of him.A wealth of Gandhian thoughts is sought.

How history repeats i don't know but when i saw Michael wood on discovery presenting a series on The story of India again i recollected Gandhi.Wood completes the global cycle.Like Bhagini Nivedita did for Swami Vivekananda and so on.

and today only i received the copy of the book story of india.

isn't that surprising?.Wood gandhi and tibetain music is the new global mutual tolerence formula for me. what about you?

REIKI THE WAY OF LIVING

Reiki is cosmic energy which helps people to cure from various disease, mental as well as physical.Believed to be having an origin in budhdhism it was re initiated by Mr USUI from Japan in last century.
There is a great followers of this stream of healers who get a different kind of energy to live and support with.
Some years back i came to know about it from my friend and he introduced me to a friend who happens to be a master of REIKI.and there after it is a matter of experience which can not be and need not be expressed. It has it' s own perpetual way of existence and it basically rejuvenate the inner strength of your personality.
It creates an innner space in your heart where you can relax on your own and leads to psychological independence.
J. Krishnamurthi says that CHOICE IS DENIAL OF FREEDOM.and reiki does exactly that innate transformation that teaches you all possible denials you may come across and living with them. Off course without fear and prejudice.
Dr. Paula Horan now recognised as Dr. Laxmi Paula Horon one of the world famous grandmaster of reiki now settled in India had visited Kolhapur. In a public speech she simply elaborated that how we live in past ,present ,and future. It was a demonstrative cum interactive talk and a great but yet a simple transforming experience.
In the global village when we are so close to each other and the heavy population is pressurising us for not even having own physical space, reiki is something which cleans your mental space and and peace flows through you.
It is believed that astrology is the first science and psychology is the last science.Dr. Laxmi is a psychologist and a hydrotherapist and a great master blend of east and west.
Once we seek it we get it... A famous story of Mr USUI goes like this ... he used to stand in the crowd with a lantern on the shoulder in a daytime, obviously if some asked him, why are you holding this lantern in daytime.. he used to tell, that 's it come i will show you the way of living REIKI.
Life itself is the very own existence of God with you who guides you day night. People like Mr USUI or Dr Laxmi Horon aare the guide posts to make it even simple as simple as REIKI means it.

Meditation Self communication!

When i was a student i used to read a lot and was always lost into the contents of the books i read ,but never thought of experiencing something i read.Reading makes you experience more virtual and many a times it leads to a different influence on your personality. We studied Freud and behaviourism and many things. I had a great impact of western thoughts, i remember a famous collection of Three lectures of Freud and then i read Sartre and existentialism. All those days were full of intellectual experiential fun. We felt that we have understood everything and we can do everything or anything.

My father was a poet and teacher of English. He was a selective reader but he indirectly initiated me to get into the spirituality and meditation. we used to follow his instructions because of his relationship. I used to criticise him and he used to accept that as it is.He never gave answer to that but never forced me to do anything. He did meditation and in the process of his spiritual development he brought many books on meditation and methods. So much so that he finally set a lesson at home for practicing meditation. In his last years before his death he used to train people. I remember he used to go to Bindu ChowkSub Jail to orient prisoners about meditation.

Slowly i had to develop quest of what he must be doing and how he can do that. He was a normal person and never used get carried away by any motivations. All that he transpired through his practices in home made me reread about meditation.Circumstances made me realise that doing meditation is more important than reading and studying about it.Most of the times that also is not possible as you are involved in your own self that you don't have time for yourself and next to impossible is self communication.
He passed away in the year 2001 due to cancer identified reasonably well in advance but, unfortunately beyond cure. we had to see him dying and all that he could peacefully suffer was because of power generated by meditation.

Before his death he wrote many things and he proposed that we should have a workshop methods for orienting this new generation for meditation. He just made a timetable of two days workshop etc. But then it was time for him to leave us.

In last 6 to 8 years when i saw many people suffering and helpless for many simple things and find it difficult to survive because of poor self communication, i found a new link of eastern theories of personalities and who you and all that something beyond Freud, behaviourism and existentialism.I took training in YOGA again found the references and the 6th chapter of GEETA etc.

And finally got to know about an animated film from http://www.spiritual-reality.com/. All that i tried to read ,all that my father was trying to tell me and all that the various lineages were trying to transpire in me was there and surprisingly a student brought it here and i had a first lesson that i have to study even morethan that meditate.

Meditation is self communication. It helps you realise who you are... It definitely lets you know how you should live after the knowledge of the basic process with actual experience. Off course initiated by some known GURU is considered better in Indian tradition however meditation is the need of the hour and let us do it!

BURNOUTS , APA & SWAMI VIVEKANANDA

Nowadays i find people very easily disappointed with small reasons.I don't know but it is happening with everybody. Most of the time they are burnouts due to the work pressures or negligence or deprivations of ideas.May be when Internet was not there this used to happen once in lifetime in country like India. But now it is happening everywhere.

I have been using the Internet since 1996 and many a times visited APA i.e. American psychological association's website.I found that the site helps you a lot about finding solutions in such situations and may be many other similar situations.

Re silence is a phenomenon that i suppose happens with every one of us. A very good input is there on this website. If you feel that you need to know what is wrong with you or why is anything wrong with you?better visit apa.org.

Swami Vivekananda has quoted long back in his discus ions that ` a fine blend of east and west may lead to better life than what we are pursuing now(i.e. his times)The Dogmatic Indian way to push the tradition and superfast modern way to reject the past tradition without verifying the facts is leading us to chaos and only GOD can save us in such situations. That is what was said by the Indian court about the status of country.Jokes apart we need a very simple and comfortable method to get rid of this burnouts and be natural.

For this we need meditation and an intellectual key to come out of the dilemma. If you know the history, the great entrepreneur ROCK FELLER who worked only for money and had such a great pressure for his own achievements that could not maintain his health and that led to frustrations and worries and ... at that point of time he happened to met swami VIVEKANANDA in US and that meeting transformed him and rest is history and now we talk of ROCKEFELLER foundation's great donations etc.

Basically getting rid of unnecessary things or thoughts or emotions is difficult but not impossible.

KABHI KABHI ADITI!

The confluence of music is very fast filling our life with variety of emotions, when i was trying to understand which song will be better to motivate students and trying very good songs from past two years.Nobody responded but kept quiet. And then i learnt that they wanted an oven fresh song no from AR Rehman's film.kABHI KABHI ADITI... and to my surprise everybody worked on the back translation of the song very fast.No hurdles of the grammar, no confusion ,no complaints,no regrets nothing.Music is the next to god

WHY ARE WE LIKE THAT?

I keep on asking myself many questions and most of the time i don't get answers and i keep wandering for it.Then i look at the trees and sky and water and.... but answers a are always ready for you.Sometimes no answer is an answer at many situations and you are always put in dilemma. Now when i think of this blog i don't know what is driving me to write all this and whether people will read it and my desire of sharing without any credit will be fulfilled or not?
but the drive is strong and no questions are allowed at the moment.
I read LOBSANG RAMPA'S book THIRD EYE and then joined his fan club or web group also .He inspired me like anything ,but i find such inspirations are very difficult to follow and how we can manage them in the 21st century?
My daughter looks at me and has a very funny smile about why i should be so concerned about so many such questions which apparently are not so relevant questions one should have .. and then why one has to be so careful in decisions?
i have no answers. Satisfying people is an art but you can not do it the planned way, more you plan more you will be in trouble.....WHY WE ARE LIKE THAT?

LETTER TO A STUDENT

I was fortunate to visit belgaum and the ramkrishna math situated in the fort of belgaum in 2001.I was able to meet SWAMI PURUSHOTTAMANANDA personally and he blessed me saying that teachers have a different and more responsible role to play in the society and he inspired me.I started reading books on Ramkrishna Paramhansa and in all the new and old books i located one new book written by swami PURUSHOTTAMANANDAJI

the name of the book is LETTER TO A STUDENT initially written in Kannada but translated in English afterwards.

It is a FAQ or simple q& a with the students ,about very small but genuine difficulties of students in 21st century. It answers many questions about food habits, reading habits, health hygiene, personality, depression, homesickness and so on....

Initially i used to counsel students but once i found this book i realised that the book is the better counsellor than me.

It costs just rs ten and available with all rk centres but as the demand is very high you have to be very meticulous about the procurement.

the isbn no is 978-81-7823-459-5 web address is sriramkrishnamath.org

or belgaum also.
